I would wait until the interviewer joked first and then you could be sure of at least a neutral reception.

Is it a bad idea for a job seeker to crack a joke during a job interview as long as the joke isn't offensive? Well cracking a joke isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as it doesn't put you in a bad light.

For instance, you still need to make sure that you come across serious about your work and your ability to get the job done. But if you are able to break humor to cause the interview environment to be more friendly, then that's actually a good thing. Anything that can help you formulate a relationship with your job interviewer is going to be helpful, including a joke.

Just make sure that your joke comes across funny instead of lame or you could have the opposite affect and cause the joke to cause the job interviewer to question you and how great they could get along with you.
