It can be said that Sainsbury's has a tall organizational structure.

The key features of a tall organization are as follows:

• Management from the top down

A supermarket chain as big as Sainsbury's is quite an operation to run and so obviously the people at the very top such as the chief executive will not be able to oversee the day to day running of the store. They will be concentrating on the bigger picture which helps the company survive and hopefully grow.

Therefore the responsibilities of running the store and the respected departments is passed down to store managers and supervisors. They will be in charge of the staff that are working in the store that day but they will still be accountable to the bigger bosses upstairs.

This is sometimes called a hierarchy and it is certainly needed in big businesses like Sainsbury's.

• Everyone has a role and their own responsibilities

Although staff at companies like Sainsbury's work as a team, there are often clear divides in the different roles staff members have. The supervisors need to make sure enough tills are open when it is busy and department managers need to keep the shelves stocked up and clean.

This level of responsibility is not as great as the store managers though as they have to make sure the store is performing well as they need to report back to head office. This chain needs to have no kinks for it to be a successful organizational structure and so everyone has to do their job and pull their weight in equal measures.
