I suppose it depends on the reason why you are asking to stop ECS payments. Make sure you are polite in your request and give a reason why you wish payments to be stopped. Try not to go into too much detail, but give a brief explanation. Keep the letter brief but make sure you include all relevant details and make sure you give them contact details and mention they can get in touch if they require any further details.
Dear . . . (it is best to phone the bank and ask who deals with such questions so that you can include a name here), __I would like to request that the ECS payments are stopped as of (date). At this point you could then include the reason.
_Then write a small closing sentence such as 'Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter and please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information.' _Don't forget to ensure you include your name, address, telephone number, email address and account number. Due to the sensitive nature of the details in this letter, it may be worth delivering it by hand to make sure it doesn't get into the wrong hands. If you hand this in directly you could also ask to have a chant with someone who may be able to deal with your request there and then. Remember to not just turn up without a letter though, as they will need to receive this in writing even if you go in person.
